Hiraeth: A Pining for the Past

Bamboo Art had always been an uncharted territory in India. With a bunch of artists experimenting in bamboo as a fine art material, Uravu had been continuously engaged in efforts to establish the credentials of bamboo as a distinct medium of art.

‘Hiraeth’ – the bamboo art exhibition by Lenin. CP, chief designer at Uravu was a longtime dream come true moment for both the artist and the organization. The event ran from May 2nd to 7th at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bengaluru. The six day exhibition was inaugurated on May 2nd by internationally acclaimed painter and artist- curator Bose Krishnamachari.

Lenin recreated forms and frames dear to his life in bamboo. The event was a culmination of his childhood memories: the water, flora and fauna of his village life. He had spent around three years, working on this project. The reception of this event from the Bengaluru crowd was spectacular. The event had a footfall of over 5000 people over six days.

Inaugural Event

The inaugural event was blessed with the esteem presence of art lovers and nature lovers including artists, bureaucrats, professors, design students etc. Chief guest Shri. Bose Krishnamachari commented that a solid crowd for an art exhibition inauguration was a surprise for him. Dr. B.N.Mohanthy IFS (Director, Indian Plywood Industries Research & Training Institute) presided over the inaugural event. Chief Guest Shri. Bose Krishnamachari delivered the keynote address.

 Installations

The three installations were titled Reincarnation, Reflection and Reverie. The first consisted of a large shell and many smaller shells on what is meant to be river bed; the second, a black base with flat bamboo pieces symbolizing leaves and vines and last, the most elaborate, is meant to be plants gently swaying in the current. Interestingly, the effect of looking at a pond from under was magnified as light mimicking sunlight on the pond’s surface dancing on the ceiling.

Media Coverage

The response from media was tremendous. Wide coverage of the exhibition, both pre event and post inaugural event helped us gain more traction.

‘Hiraeth’ was envisaged as the inaugural exhibition of our art wing. Hiraeth has set the platform for a series of exhibitons that would inevitably establish bamboo’s potential as a serious material of art. The amazing response from the visitors has given us more confidence about the future of bamboo art.
